INVENTION OF SCIENTIST
''. J ' ". ■'• ■':' LONDON; ' May 28. Dr Airchibald M. Low, a young hohdo\\ scientist,- claims to have discovered a mearis^ by' which' a wire can be made to act, as a telescope. This, at least, is' a rough idea/Of what his invention does. '.;". For a,;iiumber of years scientists have beeii at>le to : transmit photographs over a telegraph wii-e. The principle of this is a peculiar property of the element selenium.- An electric current passing '.thrc-ugh seleiiiunr yaries with the amount' of light; falling .on the selenium. * Dr Low's apparatus consists of a trans, mitjter and receiver connected by wires. transmitter consists essentially of a scrpen divided into, a large number of small squares, each being a selenium ''cell." This screen is contained m a box. In front of it is a lens. The arrangement is like that m a camera with the screen taking the place of the phbtogjraphio plate. • The lens throws an image of any object before it upon the screen. Different parts of this image vary m light and shade, so that the light falling on the squares of the screen varies m These squares are brought . into _ eleciricscl connection by wire with the receiving apparatus. As the light falling on,jthe squares vary so do the 'electrical currehts vary^, These currents actuate elejutro-magnets, which m their turn work shutters .through which a light shines. The amount of opening the shutter depends on the strength of the current and therefore on the intensity of the light falling on the corresponding square of the receiving screen. Thus, a candle flame would give a bright image on certain, squares of the spreen, and the corresponding 1 shutters m [the receiver would -opon widely, allowing light to pass- through freely. And a person looking through at the receiver would see an,;-Itaage of the candle flame. ''''"'• Suppose the candle is moved. The image moves across the transmitting screen. This indicates how the apparatus works^ . _
