AMERICAN METHODS AND A RETALIATION. {F.rom Out Parliamentary Reporter.) '-•■■' ' " Wellington, this day. America stands in a different position from other countries in relation te> copyright law, as was demonstrated in Parliament y-ss'j^rdav afternoon during a committee disdussion on the Copyright Bill. This measure brings New Zealand within the scope of an international copyright agreement. Within the countries concerned the publication of any work gives t'he originator absolute copyright without registration. ' ,Mr G. W. Russell pointed out that the United States of America refused to give Copyright ib any English book unless it was printed in* America from type set up in that country. If America took that stand he suggested that the authors of ' thatrtj&untfy should not he given protection in New Zealand equal to that of England, seeing that the latter country would not impose such a handicap upon a New Zealand author. The Hon. M.r. Herdman, Minister in change qf. the BUU "replied that a book published in America had no copyright in New Zealand. Mr Russell : Then it will bs quite open to publishers in New Zealand to make use to any extent they choos4 of American books and pictures. If we serve Uncle Sam with a little of his own sauce it mav bring him to his senses . PICTURE REPRODUCTION. Answering Dr ' Newman, who wanted to know if the practice of reproducing in New Zealand journals photographs of famous Engli&h pictuVes would be an infringement, the 'Minister replied in the affirmative. * A suggestion was made, by Mr Russell that out of for copyright of works of ' art 'in New Zealand a fund could be "created -to encourage New Zealand artists. % .
