Tho strike movement that started as a. result, of the late riots, is spreading throughout the Liege basin, where nearly, all the collieries: and metal industries have been throv/n idle. Liege itself has' the appearance of a city •m a state of siege, two regiments of infantry besides gendarmes, the police, and the Civic Guard, being kept- under arms day and night. ; ' , ' Publio opnion is ' being exerted to arrest the wave of sanguinary rioting and the destruction of •property and; sacking bf churches by which the out-; breaks of the last few days have been marked. > All the newspapers unite m urgingthe people to abstain from, vidlenoe. If no general strike is called/it is believed that the disorders will gradually die bujt. One of the leading dailies, the Independence Beige," says that the Belgium, to safeguard her national unity, must meet the problem, of the Walloon provinces, where the majority of the population is wearied of being; governed by the Clerical majority of the Flemish provinces.
