FRESH UNIVERSITY FACILITIES,
INTERVIEW WITH THE MINISTER.
(Special to Herald.) \ WELLINGTON, this day. The, widening of University education facilities' promised by the Minister qi Education recently takes the shape of an extension of the new scheme gazetted last evening. Hitherto, stated the Hon. J. A. Hanan to your correspondent, bursaries of this character have been tenable only, to those who gained credit m the University junior scholarship examination, even although they had not obtained scholarships. The new system enables the students mentioned m the regulations quoted below to obtain a bursary sufficient to meet all the University fees. In the same way as junior free places at secondary schools and, technical schools are open to all who havo satisfactorily completed their course at schools, and senior free places to all who have . made good progress while holdirig junior free places, so iwith the University ' .bursaries;' free University education will be open to all who have satisfactorily completed the four years' secondary course, while m addition pupil teachers and probationers who now. are eligible . for admission to . the training college may elect instead to take the bursary, thus gaining an University education, and . afterwards spending a year m. the training college to complete their professional training. The -'conditions 'of the bursaries are as follows,:— -Te^m^ and conditions : A bursary may be. awarded on the recommendation of the University of New Zealand to any person of either sex, who,' being a matriculated student of the University bf New Zealand, and being ■' resident m. New Zealand for ope year immediately preceding the date of application fora .bursary;' (a)' 'satisfies the conditions for ! a University junior scholarship or for a senior national scholarship, and obtains "credit" at the examination for ' Such ' scholarship, or (b) has I within; oil e year arid six months immediately preceding gained a higher leaving certificate, or (c) has within one year and six .months immediately preceding completed his' term of service as a pupil teacher o'i\ probationer m some education district m accordance with the regulations and to .the satisfaction of the Education ' Board of that district, \ and declares his intention of entering a recognised .training college on the completion; of the, tenure" , of his bursary, 0£ (dj has completed ' his , cpurse of, training .at a recognised training college, or (c) has gained" a' teacher's certificate of a class not lower than Class C.i The term is three years, but a bursary shall not be tenable with a University junior scholarship, a v senior national scholarship, or any other scholarship exhibition or bursar^ the value of which 6xc , oe'd3.£2o !
