■ . ", NEW YORK, April 5. Alter two years of Socialist government the City of Milwaukee on Wednesday returned to the Capitalistic fold. The vote m favor of the overthrow of i S !? idel ' 1 ' the famous Socialist Mayor, and the Socialist Municipal Council was -overwhelming. Altogether 73,000 citizens — 14^000 more than, two years ago—went to the polls and elected Dr. .Gerhard Bading, an independent candidate, Mayor by a majority of 12,972; "-"- The final stages of the cariloaigri Witnessed an outbreak of frenzied patriotism among the non-Socialist voters, who everywhere waved the Stars arid Stripes, declaring the result to bo the victory df the national flag over the red flag. The Socialists intensified the opposition 'to their regime by ostentatiously leaving v & public meeting at which tho Stars and Stripes were unfurled, and by proclaim^ PPig, through the party orgftn, that "Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel.'.' .
HIGH RATES AND' LONGER HOURS. Milwaukee is fll city of 375,000' inhabitants m Wisconsin. In --April, ■ 1910, it elected Kinil Seidel, one -Of" the most famous of American Socialists,- as its, Mayor; 'He announced, that he would apply Marx's doctrines, --promised « lavish scheme, of public works, and] prophesied that-' unemployment; would vanish, from tlie* city. To provide funds -for these, public works the rates were increased by £90,000 m 1910 and by £180,000 m 1911. At the same time expenditure on public services which employed comparatively little labor was c.'.t down, and workers m those services were, required to work- for longer 7 hours. As tho result of this experiment m 1811 20,000 men were reported out. of work by the trades unions. Tl* Associated Charities Society declared that there was grmter suffering., among- the poor than m former years. ' A further increase m the rates was threatened this year. . Both political •/ parties m the city,; however, combined m February last m" a campaign to' drive but the Socialists.
