Within three weeks of taking office, and within two days , after visiting Auckland', the Minister for Internal Affairs has practically settled the, vexed auestion of overcrowding at the Avonale mental hospital. The building on tho female side will be raised to two storeys, with accommodation for 40 extra patients, and at the rear a new ward will be built for 70 or 80 patients. Another building to be erected will: accommodate at least 70 patients. C. Warnford, aged 72, watchman at Goldie's timber mill railway .wharf, has been received at the hospital withserious injuries. He was m an unconscious condition, and- when he recovered consciousness he was unable to give any account of his condition. He is presumably the victim of a fall or an assault. A strong branch of the association of honorary members of the territorial force was formed here last evening, with the object of giving those not compelled to serve an opportunity to assist the new defence scheme by their moral support. Oiie employer present declared' tliat 'the Defence Act was one of the most' beneficial placed on the statute book.
