A GREAT SMASH.
ALAMEDA CRASHES THROUGH DOCK, SENT FULL SPEED AHEAD. SINKS STEAMER ON THE OTHER : SIDE. (Press Assn. — By Telegraph. — Copyright.) (Received April 27, 12.30 p.m.) NEW YORK/ April 26. A remarkable shipping"" disaster occurred at Seattle. The steamer Alameda ploughed through the Coleman Dock, the finest structure on the Pacific Coast, carrying off one hundred feet bodily across the deck. The Alameda hit a small steamer lying at the other side of the wharf, sinking it instantly. The captain's orders to the engine room were misunderstood when the vessel was docking, with the result that the vessel went full steam ahead. Tlie captain tied down the whistle and a crowd of people on the dock end ran for their lives, but several were injured. The crew- of the small vessel were flung into the water, but were rescued. The Alameda) was for many years engaged m the San-Francisco-Auckland-Sydney service of the Oceanic Company, being later superseded by the newer vessels of that company. The steamer was then placed m the Honolulu run, and has later been doing coastal work.
