(Press Assn.— By Telegraph.— Copyright.) , . ' CAULFIELD, October 8. Australia's great racing carnival.' opened to-day at Caulfield, m the presence of a big crowd and m the finest possible weather. As usual, the meeting suffered somewhat owing to the A.J.C. races m Sydney, but still many inter-State visitors attended. The course and the appointments were all m good order. The visitors, included the Vice-ltegal party and the officers of, the Twitch fleet . at present visiting Melbourne. The first race started earlier than- usual, .owing to train arrangements. Everything' went smoothly, but the coveted Debutant Stakes gave the officials some trouble. A lot of crowding occurred m front of,, the ,staml when Klvanite and Orvieto were fighting out .. a good race.- A protest was entered that Elvanite had his chances spoiled. by.' interference' on the part of Lewis, on Orvieto, .but the stewards, after hearing considerable evidence, dismissed the protest. The owner of Elyanite will probably appeal against the decision. The race for the Caulfield Stakes . was a good "go," but after the first few furlongs Alawa had no hope. The New Zealand-bred mare Artillerie, last year's winner of the same race, again won m good style. She was ridden with good generalship by Ryan.
