(Per Press. Association.)

WELLINGTON, this day. The new physical laboratory, at Victoria College, was opened by His Ilxoellency the Governor on Saturday night, Lord Islington setting the machinery m motion by means of wireless telegraphy. This arrangement was very successfully carried out, the guests responding with hearty applause to the flash from the transmitter. Mr Von Haast, the chairman of the College council, Professor Laby and Lord Islington spoke of the value of the application of science to the industrial, commercial, and agricultural life of the community, and trusted the new laboratory would interest local manufacturers, iron founders, and engineers, so that one central place might be utilised for the purposes of the scientific development of industry. . . Pre-fessor Laby, m emphasising the value of the laboratory m contributing something original to research work, mentioned that some time ago the College Council offered the British Antarctic expedition under Captain Scott the use of the laboratory for standardising their instruments prior to their departure for the South Pole, and a, letter had been received from the physicist of the party accepting the offer.
