AUCKLAND, this day. A deputation of boot importers to-day pointed out to the Hon. A. W. Hogg, "Minister for Customs and) Labor, that the duty on certain classes, of felt slippers that could not be manufactured locally, and which cost lld, was ll^d, and that wliile a slipper with two pieces of leather on the heel came m at 6d, the duty on a precisely similar slipper with -three layers came. in at ls 6d. The Minister promised' to secure a better definition, and to endeavor to arrange that slippers which could not be manufactured m New Zealand should come m at a lower rate.
A deputation of wharf workers waited on the Hon. Mr Hogg, asking that immediate relief should be compulsory m case of accident, nnd that m the event of recurring injury from old a-ccidents, the employer should be made liable. Mr Hogg stated that* he would see that provision was made m future legislation for immediate attention upon, accidents, and that he would! give consideration to the second request. The Hon. A. W. Hogg, replying to 'a small deputation to-day, said tliere was no doubt about the existence of a flour ring. In reference to the high price of bread, he said. that if the 'bakers 'were charging ,too much, aiid it seemed tthey were, consumers should! organise and see what' could be done m the way of co-operative bakeries.
PALMERSTON N.. this day. . Michael Moyriihan, a " publican at Shannon, was charged at t^e Stipendiary Magistrate's Court to-day with foui alleged breaches of the Licensing Act, by issuing small -cards at the recent licensing elections containing instructions how to vote. . The , case . was the first heard m New Zealand, and was laid under sub-sections A and B. section 157, of the Legislature Act. The police prosecuted, and the facts were admitted by the defence. Counsel addressed the Court on the legal position, and the d-ecisionK was reserved.
WELLINGTON, this' day. In his recent speech at the Rifle Club social, Colonel Collins said' that great changes had taken place m shooting, and they would have to fall m line with other nations and go m for musketry training, with disappearing targets, at unknown ranges. He had a great regard' for the old black and wliite target., but further opposition to the new id&i was not desirable m the interests ol rifle shooting. This will mean a change m the policy of the Rifle Association arid naturally alteration m company and rifle club shooting. ' Both volunteers and rifle tlubs, therefore, will be well advised to adopt the service matches for ordinary competition to the new conditions, m view of changes that may be expected at the big, meeting.
DUNEDIN, this day. At the Police Qourt this morning. Nellie Lewis, charg-ad ,w.ith being i. rogue and vagabond, received a sentence of twelve .months' imprisonment.
