The dry weather has caused much uneasiness at Motu, as at otlier places, for fear of tire. On Thursday an extensive bush fire was raging, and yesterday Mr W. B. Oir (who recently married a daughter of Mr lan S. Simson, and had comfortably settled at the Motu) had his house completely destroyed by fire. Miss Val. Simson was staying with her sister, and all lost their personal belongings. Miss Simson went to Mr Wright's place, and ,there they had to fight the flames, about twenty settlers rallying to save the liouse from destruction. The fire thus covered an area of four or five miles long.- Mr Qrr's- house was insured for £250, and the furniture for £350, both m the Commercial Union office ; but his loss will . considerably exceed that. Among the things destroyed were all the valuable wedding presents that had been taken up. Other settlers had a warm time, but as far as is known at present only the one house has been destroyed. Matters.' looked so serious at Mr Wright's yesterday that the furniture was removed tq a place of - safety. On Friday last Mp W. D. S. Mac Donald's homestead, during his absence, had a narrow escape from destruction, the fire having spread over a distance of a mile from a section of fallen bush which had been burnt. Mrs Mac Donald and those at home with her had to sit up all night, for fear of the flames reaching the house. Fortunately, when the fife '■■had crept within a few chains of the dwelling, the wind changed, and the situation was saved.

Rakauroa- settlers report havifig/ a pretty warm time lately/ as there have been numerous fires spread, but fortunately no dwellings have been destroyed.
