Replying to a deputation, which asked for extra postal facilities for Wellington, Sir Joseph Ward this afternoon stated it would be necessary before long to go m for the pneumaticsvstem m Wellington. This would obviate the necessity of equipping suburban offices with the paraphernalia of a big office. Such a system would probably cost between £15,0C0 and £20,000. Scarlet fever is still very prevalent m Wellington. Since the beginning of April 318 cases have been reported m the city. Seven cases were fatal. DUNEDIN, this day. Tlie Otago Employers' Association have wired the Commissioner of Customs protesting, on behalf of the New Zealand Woollen Manufacturers' Association, against aniline dyes being placed on tne preferential list, as nearly all dyes used m the colony are of foreign manufacture. The message says it means a heavy increase m the cost, and it is a very serious matter to change the dyes. Henry F. Smith pleaded guilty to stealing explosives from Palmer' 9 quarry, and to burglary at Hogg and Co.'s. timber merchants, and was committed for senienre.
