BRAVE RESCUE IN A HEAVY SEA,
LONDON, Jan. 28. The Committee of Lloyd's have dtecidted to bestow the silver medal of the Society upon First Mate J. O'Connor, andi the bronze medal of the Society on C. Larsen, J. Read, M. Morrison, andl F. Gradike, members of the crew of the British ship Lonsdale, as an honorary recognition of their extraordinary exertions m contributing to the saving of life on the occasion of the loss of the British ship Eivio off the coast of Chili m October last. The Eivio had experienced very heavy weather, and' sustained considerable dbmage, and on September 30th the cargo of coal was found to be on. fire. Explosions occurred at different times, andi the fire could not be got under. The boats were all damaged through the heavy weather encountered). The Lonsdale was signalled on the 2nd) October, and stood by till daylight the next morning, when she launched her lifeboat m a. very heavy sea manned by a volunteer crew consisting of the recipients of the. medals. This boat, on getting alongside the Eivion, was dashed against her sicte by a rough sea- and nearly filled with water. It, however, by great effort on the part of the crew", succeeded m returning to the Lonsdale with ten of the crew of the Eivion, aud shortly after returned 1 and rescued the remainder. The Eivion was then m a sinking condition, with clouds 1 of smoke issuing from tine hatches.
