Members consequently were treated to a division as if upon the main question. Two hundred and sixty voted I for Mr Churchill's motion and 303 fur tlm previous question. The supporters ! of Mr Churchill included Lord Hamilton 1 and 14 other free-food Unionists, and 65 j Irish Nationalists. Several, including 1 Lord Hugh Cecil, abstained from voting. Four voted with the Government.
Mr Lyttelton protested against discussion and obstruction. He said the Government wished to ascertain m a. businesslike spirit the colonial proposals, and discuss them with an unbiased mind. Mr Churchill's motion was intended to mislead the unwaa-y, to obscure and not elicit tJie trutlu Mr Chamberlaini, defending tlie brovenunent's attitude, declared this of the motion was to muzzle the Colonial Conference. Mr Asquith, speaking on Ma" Churchill's motion, taunted tlie Government with consistently and undisguisedly treating the opinion of the House with contempt and fettering Parliament. lne time was coming when they would appear before the tribunal whore they would bo unable to move the previous question.
