AUCKLAND, this day. Surveyors liave been engaged by the Railway Department to survey the routes of the proposed duplication of railways from Auckland to Penrose, and the work was commenced! on Wednesday. A large amount of data ito connection with the matter will have to be" collected before a decision can be come to as to whether the existing railway will be straightened ami duplicated and the tunnel m the Domain enlarged to cany two sets of rails, or whether an alternative route would be better. The survey is expected to last several months.
The claims of the Auckland Ironmoulders' Industrial Union were investigated yesterday before Mr Justice Chapman and Messrs plater and. Brown. Two new disputes for the Conciliation Board 1 were filed with the .Clerk of Awards, the grocers' assistants and fish-curers;
At a meeting of fruiterers regarding the Shop Act. it was resolved l that it was desirable that the draft Bill as it left the Lower House be reinstated as re. gards the exemption of fruiterers. At a meeting of hairdressers and tobacconists regarding the Shops Act, it Mas dbcided that a deputation wait on the Premiei' ancK inform liihx that they desired that clause 3 should be struck out, and that people m the trade should fix their own hours by a majority. Mr Cotter, *soli!citor, is a passenger by the Manapouri for the Islands. He goes to personally advise the' King of Tonga m. connection with the deportation of tlie Prime Minister, Sateke. He also visits Fiji/ to confer with Sateke. The King is determined! to use every effort to establish treaty rights.
HAWERA, this day. The Hon. 0. H. Mills and! party returned to Hawera last night after doing Mount Egmont. They had glorious wea. ther and a splendid view, all the members of the party getting to tlie top of Paatbamus Peak. Mr Mills left for Stratford this morning. WELLINGTON, this day. The Methodist Conference resumed today. The Rev! J. W. Burton, a missionary deputation, from Fiji, attended, and spoke of -ihe;, great need- for missionary work amongst the : Indian community at Fiji. A deputation from the New Zealand Alliance also urged! assistance to Father Hay's mission. The Rev. Mr Isitt's remarks on the subject were cordially received. It is almost certain that the championship regatta to-morrow will be lowed at Petone. The number of entries constitutes a record/ for New Zealand, if not for Australasia. Crews from Auckland, Wanganui, Cliristchurch, Wellington, Dunedin, Invercargill and Westport will compete. There will be ten . starters m •the champion, sculls, eight m the champion fours, nine each m the maiden fours and pairs, seven m the junior fours, and ten m the senior clinker fours. It is expected here that Wanganui Union will win the champion fours, Auckland Rowing Club second. Star (Wellington) Club thard, Invercargill Rowing Club fourth. Webb, of Wanganui, is considered to be the likely winner of the champion sculls. . HOKTTDXA, this day. In the Supreme Court the jury failed to agree m the case of John N. Pascoe, Grey Valley, charged! with :procuring abortion. A fresh trial; was ordered for Monday next accused) being admitted to bail of £500. W : : Archibald McAllister, charged with arson at Granity, Westport distifet, ; was found not guilty at the Supreme Court. The evidence proved tliat his house was m his wife's name, and practically the property of accused 1 . The, case against Murphy and 1 'Bryan, two young men, charged with assault* with intent to commit robbeiy at Cobden, Greymouth district; is now proceeding.
