DUNEDIN, this day. the Fire Brigades' competitions began to-day m splendid weather, with a good attendance.

In the double hose event Palmerston North took 85sec. Rangiora withdrew. •Sumner 'were disqualified for dragging the hose. Kitmara, 86_sec; Napier, 89 sec. Port Chalmers found the hydtauit stopped with stones, and are to be given, another run. Timaru went right through smoothly, doing the work m 77w0. including L.cc penalty for loose coupling. South Dunedin was disqualified for not coming back to within five yards of the mark. Several teams, including Christchurch, are to be allowed a secoud trial, owing to a stone m the plug. - A cable has been received from the Country Brigades' Board of Victoria, stating thai their demonstration started today tit WaiTiiambooly audi conveying greetings to New Zealand firemen.
