GISBORNE-KARAKA RAILWAY.

PREMIER CANNOT ATTEND OPENING.

In response to the invitation of tho East Coast Railway League to be present at the opening of the line to. Karaka, on March 30th the following reply was received, last evening from the Premier: "Many thanks f';r your kind telegram inviting me to tlie opening ceremony of the Gisborne-Te Karaka railway ut the end of the present month. I regret v^ery much that m consequence of a prior engagement I cannot be with you on that day. I hope the ceremony will be well worthy of tlie occasion, and if not with you m person I am with yon m spirit. Kind regards. " Regarding tlie want of another engine and trucks- for tlie line, the Hon. Mr niill-Jone", Minister for Public Works, wind last evening: "Your wire m reference to haulage of timber, etc., received. As- this is a matter for the Working Railways Department to deal with, I have referred your telegram on to the Hon. Minister for Railways." The Hon. J. Carroll sent tlie following telegram on th? same subject : "Have al- 4 ready represented matter to both tlie * Railway audi Public Works Departments. - Tliiey assured me that both matters would be promptly attended to." MEETING AT KARAKA. . An enthusiastic meeting of Te Karaka residents was lw-'ld last evening m con. nection with the opening of the railway. Mr A, M. Lewis presided. A J&&n%'\^_ committee of about 20 members was set up, and a draft of the sports programme was considered. It was decided to offer £45 m trophies for the numerous events, Messrs Lewis, Sefton, andl Devery were appointed secretaries. About 16 guineas were subscribed m the room towards tbe funds.
