Smuts told Mr Chamberlain that since the Government held the books, the Transvaal' Government should be able lo trace the missing money. Mr Chamberlain said that the Government possessed some of the missing books, but all dealing with remittances to Europe had disappeared. The , Government were now aware to whom the money had been sent. Botha liinted* that if the late Government were amnestied perhaps they might give information. Mr Chamberlain replied that some who had been permitted to return would give no help. Smuts wished it to be understood that the Boers wore not ungrateful for Britain's efforts. Africander bond is steaJthily spreading throughout the new colonies. Loyalists oppose Fischer's return. They a.re convinced that the Africanders will use him for the purposes of sedition. Dr. Jamieson has been" elected president of the South African League. Mr Chamberlain visits Potchefstroom, Mafekine, Kimberlev. and Bloemfontein. PERTH, Jan. 13. Dr Jamieson, Minister of Lands, Jias accepted tiiis appointment of Minister of Lands m South Africa with a seat m the Upper House and a salary of £2000, with £500 of allowances.
