About 70 of the number were mable to pass the tests, some being under weight, some over height, some married, '.ome under age, while several could not pass the chest measurement. The final weeding out resulted in 36 being selected to go into training at Newtown camp. Ihose selected are representative of all the local corps, the Heretaunga having the largest proportion. All the men are ' ,>•* natives of New Zealand. Several officers in various parts of the colony have volunteered, but no selection has yet been mads. The Agent-General wires confirming the statement that Bradford was not killed, but was wounded and taken prisoner. Mr Chamberlain has formally signified - his acceptance of the New Zealand co'ntin- ' gent and guns. Among the officers suggested for the command is Colonel Watt, of Wanganui. The Heretaunga Light Horse have 14 men selected, making 31 from this company in all. Instructions have been sent to the police depots to forward all horses belonging to the force suitable for the contingent.
