METHUEN AWAITS REINFORCEMENTS.
HOW LYDDITE KILLS. SALVATION ARMY OFFICERS COMMANDEERED. PLUMER'S MARCH TO MAFEKING ABANDONED. (Received Dec. 22, 9.30 a.m.) Capetown, Deo. 21. Lord Methnen is awaiting cavalry and artillery reinforcements before making a further move. Fifteen thousand Boers are massed opposite the British position. The shock from, lyddite killed large numbers at Majersfontein. After the battle many were found standing upright, dead. The Boera posted 'the Germans, Hollanders, and Irish in most dangerouß positions in every fight. The Boers have commandeered the Salvation Army officers, compelling them to fight. Colonel Plumer has returned to Tuly. His march to Mafeking had to be abandoned, owing to the severe drought. He is garrisoning at Macelontsie, the Boers having disappeared from the vicinity of the town. h . The Boers fired an empty shell into Mafeking containing a message advising the besieged not to drink all the whisky.
