[Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, This day. The Otaki election is fixed for the 6th of January. The Hutt residents have decided to adopt the Kngineer's proposals for deepening and widening the river to prevent floods. The estimated cost is £18,000. AUCKLAND, Last Night. An eight-roomed house situated at Bombay, and owned by Herbert Day, was destroyed by fire at noon to-day. The insurance on the house waa £156, and on the furniture £50, in the North British and Mercantile offices. A fire occurred tit Whangarei this morning, when ii six-roomed house occupied by Hodgson, a pork butcher, and owned by Mr W. MoLean, was completely destroyed. With the exception of three pieces of furniture and a few articles of clothes, Hodgson lost everything. Neither house nor furniture was insured. Both McLean and Hodgson are heavy losers by the fire. A young Maori woman named Rooka Kiwi fell into a boiling spring at Rotorua, and was frightfully. scalded. Grave fears are entertained for her recovery. The weather is unsettled and stormy for the Oiago crioket match this afternoon. The employees of a local company, name withheld, gave two days' pay to the Transvaal fund, which, with an equal amount donated by the company, makes about Later The Te Anau, with the Otago cricketers, was signalled at 1.30 p.m. No doubt a stormy voyage has been encountered, and it is very doubtful if they will play this afternoon. DUNEDIN, Last Night. The Education Board have decided to disrate Port Chalmers' district schools. They gave notice to the other District High Schools of their intention to modify the present system. CARTERTON, This day. At a largo meeting of Mr Buchanan's supporters at Oreytown last night, it was decided to raise a fund to erect an operating theatre at the South Wairarapa hospital, in commemoration of his eighteen years' service to the district. The scheme promises to be taken up heartily.
