WELLINGTON, To-day.
At a public meeting, about 150 being present, mostly business men, it was decided to give Mr Ward a public welcome on his return, followed by a banquet. During May 1503 persons arrived in the colony and 2359 left. Mr Ronayne, General Manager of Railways, who has been inspecting lli«»- lines in the South, says that the recent rise in wheat gives quite a fillip to business, especially at the Bluff, whence heavy shipments of produce are being made. A large area is being laid down in wheat this season.
INVEECARGILL, To-day.
At the Police Court Frank Hewitt was fined £1 and costs for selling liquor without a license. The Bench commented strongly on the action of the police in engaging spies to secure a conviction.
The American Transportation Commission arrived at the Bluff by the Talune to-day, and left by rail for the North after inspecting, the railway system. After leaving Auckland on the 13th inatant, they are due in Russia early in September travelling over 3,000 miles-by railway. Their trip from start to finish lasts three years.
TIMARU, To-day.
At the Magistrate's Court a woman was fined 10s and costs for assaulting a teacher io the Timaru school because he punished her son. She complained that he boxed her boy'g ears when he was suffering from disease of the ears.
