ROVERS V. TE ARAI.
A friendly game took place on Saturday at Te Arai between the Rovers and Te Ami Clubs. The country team, being short, had to pick some players from the field, and the town team also had three outsiders in their ranks. The Rovers had the best of the game all, through, keeping the Te Arai penned in their 25 nearly the whole time 1 . The only score made was a goal kicked by Gray from, a mark obtained \>y Fiolayaon, though the Te Arai were Sorced several times, the match ending in a win for the town club by 4 points to nothing. Mr Kirkham was referee, and Messrs Evans and Luo lin o umpires.
A latter liaß been received from the secretary of the New South Wales Sheepbreeders' Association by the agricultural editor of the Canterbury Times, conveying a pressiDg invitation to New Zealand sheep-breeders to exhibit at the Association's inaugural show in Sydney, opening on June 29th. The. letter states that it is to the interest of breeders to exhibit freely, as many Australians who have country suitable for crossbreds nre looking forward to the show for an education in the merits of English breeds, most of them being unacquainted with any other sheep than the merino, and not a few of them made bad bargains in purchasing mongrel-bred sheep at the two previous sales. The letter also asks the recipient to ascertain and forward the names of qualified judges of longwool and Down sheep who are going over for the show and the sales, also to receive entries. At a meeting of the Auckland Trades and Labor Council, the executive officers of all affiliated unions met the Council in order to discuss the desirableness of esiablishing a labor paper for the colony, to be published in Wellington, as recommended by the trades conference at Christchurch recently. Resolved, " That the Council will pay its share of the expense of printing a prospectus, and asked for other necessary information from Wellington. 11 It was decided by the Council to thank the Hon. Mr Seddon for deciding to erect the auxiliary lunatic asylum on the cooperative principle. It was also decided to write to the Minister of Labor regarding the continued practice of some employers in deducting from. wages money to pay insurances. The Council appointed Messrs W. C. Fraser and W. Johnston as their representatives on the Central Council. ___^__— -.
