Depression at Broken Hill.
Melbourne, Feb. 27 The closing down of the Block 14 smelters means an almost total suspension of work underground as well. Altogether 200 men will be affected by the stoppage, and 150 have already been discharged. The remainder are being kept on for a short time, to make the mine thoroughly secure below. The breaking down of ore is completely suspended, but prospecting will be continued. It will be three months before the sulphide concentration plant can be got ready for work, there being a lob of delay m getting the machinery on the ground. The stoppage is no doubt due, as before stated, to the shrinkage of supplies of carbonate, combined, perhaps, with the low price of silver. \\ hat lead ore the mine ; now contains is wanted for purposes of blending with the sulphide concentrates. A goodly number of the men thrown out of work will find employment from the Proprietary, which is the only company now smelting m Broken Hill.
