Ciirtstchuroii, to-day. — At. Little Rivee on Monday Mr Rolleston addressed the Ellesmete electors. A motion of confidenc in the candidate was lost, one of confidence in the Government being carried by a sweeping majority. Mr J. S. Evison is out for Christchurch. I.\vercar(ut,l, to-day. — Messrs J. Hatch and G. W. Broderick are announced for fnvercargill. A Tanranga despatch says: — Air W. Kelly, the present member, has announced his candidature for the Bay of Plenty seat against all comers, and Mr W. Frazer is expected here next week to address the electors. Both the declared candidates are Government supporters, and this fact Iras led to much talk anungsb the electors as to the reason for the two choosing this electorate. Mr Edwin Edwards, of Paeroa, has written to a paper stating that he is likely to stand, and would be an Independent Liberal. It is also rumored that the Rev. Charles Jordan, of this town, is likely to stand in the interest of the Temperance party, he having been asked to do bo. Mr 1. M. Humphreys, solicitor, also privately declares his intention to become a candidate. Mr Reardon, who is now visiting Gisborne, informs us that he is a candidate for Hawke's Bay and is supported by the Knights of Labour, the Liberal party and by the Government. The Wellington Evening Press says of Mr Wilfurd, the Government, but aristocratic, nominee for Wellington suburbs : — " Mr Wilford, is a youthful lawyer, and not the ! Only one in the colony who h^s carneil tlie right to make out bills of costs without having the abilities of a Stout or the experience of a Ti avers/ According to reports of the speech of Mr Travers, one of the Wellington candidates, he is nob a believer in committees or paid canvassers. At his meeting he related the experience of a candidate who had a committee of 24, and a large number of canvassers who had represented that they had secured the promises of 1450 electors. At the eloction the candidate received 19 votes, and every one of his committee of 24 tried to convince him that he was one of the 10.
