« Thus the Telegraph : — The Napier " democrats " havo started a report that Mr Swan docs not intend to go to the poll, but will retire from the contest on the return of Mr R.. Douglas McLean from England. There is not a shadow of truth in it. Mr Swan has been chosen by tho people of Napier as cheir representcitive, whereas Mr R. T>. McLean is as much a stranger to them a a Mr Gannon is. The " Democrats " would be only too glad if Mr Swan would retire, for in that they think lies the only ghost of a show for their candidate. But we may tell them this, that under no circumstances whatever will they see their candidate elected for this borough. In racing slang Mr Gannon js a <( dead 'uu."
