Says the Wellington Post : — A very impudent class of thief is at present at work in the city, two most barefaced robberies having occurred within the last three days. In one of the city hotels on Thursday evening Mr .lames Stewart, of the firm of Stewart and Co., sawmillers, wa.s robbed whilst asleep of a gokl watch and chain of the value of LOO. Last (Friday) evening about nine o'clock a steerage passenger by the s.s. Tarawera, which arrived from the South, was relieved of his watch, a silver one, and what loose casli he possessed. Tho victim, a digger by profession, reported the robbery to Detective Benjamin about 11 o'clock, stating that he had been induced to visit an hotel by some young fellow he met in the .street. After drinking, they went for a stroll alony the quay, where they were met by another man. Shortly after joining the new acquaintance the passenger states he was set upon by the two men and knocked down, and his watch and cash taken from him. Being a stranger to the town he does not remember the exact scene of actien, but thinks it was somewhere upon the reclaimed land. The detectives are enquiring into the matter. Genius without conscience is like a fire without flame, not to warm, but to burnwhile a pair of Hennessy's Watertights will keep the feet dry and warm without the aid pf any tire — Advt.
