LOCAL AND GENERAL.

We understand that Mr. J. McG. Fraser, who was formerly a solicitor in Edinburgh, and was recently admitted a barrister and solicitor in Now Zealand, arrived by the Rotorua yesterday in Gisborne, where he intends to commence the practice of his profession. Mr. C. D. Berry proceeded to Auckland yesterday for the purpose of conferring with Mr. W. Fleming, Chairman of Directors of the South Pacific Petroleum Company, on matters relating to the working of the mine. Mr. Fleming had not an opportunity of coming to Giaborne, as it is his intention to proceed by next mail boat to San Francisco. We have been requested to stato that mails for Tologa Bay, Port Awamii, Akuaku, Tuparoa, and Te Maohai, per overland route, will close to-morrow afternoon at the usual hour, Mails for Auckland, per Tairoa, will close this (Monday) evening at 7 p.m. Mr. R. H. Fisher, of the Bank of New Zealand, Tapauui, and formerly of Lawrence, is about to leave there to take charge of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency at Gisborne. Among the Government papers received to-day from the printer, is one headed "A Roll of persons in Government employ," the perusal of which is very interesting as showing the amount which each official receives in respect of his services. We refer our readers to the advertisement of Boardman Dawson & Co., who have undertaken the business of cabinetmakers and engineers. The prices at which furniture &c, are advertised will be a proof of their ability to supply goods at a figure which will be satisfactory to all who require hpusehold furniture. Mr. James Browne — better known in the Colonial journalistic world a'# Mr."Snyder" Browne — announces in^'our advertising columus that he has entered upon — to him — the more congenial occupation of Bookseller and Stationer, to which he has added a circulating library in two branches — one for adults, and the second with a varied collection of books for the youth of both sexes for the town and its districts. Mr. Browne is authorised to receive orders for the Cambridge edition of the Revised New Testament, a supply of which he will receive about the middle of July.

A correspondent of the Thames Advertiser writiug from Wellington says : — There is a movement on foot to have District Judges whose services have been dispensed with, appointed to the positions of the Chief Resident Magsitrates. It is said when they in many instances gave up a lucrative practice for a District Judge-ship, where the emoluments were small, it was with the understanding they were appointed for life the same as the judges of the Supreme Court, but now they were under the hardship of having to begin practice again under unfavourable circumstances. They think it therefore unfair that laymen should hold judicial offices who were in some instances their clerks, at salaries— which together with travelling expenses are— much higher than they were in receipt of, The matter ia under consideration. Mr. Rees has prepared a bill to be submitted to the House for the establishment of a Harbour Board and the construction of harbour works at Gisborne. The railway to Ormond is also to be agitated for.
