THE TRUSTEES' CIRCULAR.
[To the Editor of the, Herald.] Sir, — Referring to the three or four columns of matter on thia aubjecfc in your issue of yesterday evening, we beg to remind your readers that the real questions at issue are briefly : — 1. The slander on the deceased Captain Read, and insult ; to his heirs. ' % The interference with the arrangements between Captain Read's Estate and Mr. W. L. Rees and the Natives. Now, whilst fully appreciating the amusing story borrowed for: theoccasidh from •' Gil Bias," we entirely fail to per-' ceire how it, or the how far less sensible original matter of the Herald's leading article, affords any justification to that newspaper for our complaint against it. As to the Directors, wo are obliged for their consideration of our circular, but cannot help thinking that the principal reason for not answering certain of our inquiries is really because no satisfactory answer could be given. With reference to Mr. Page's letter, whilst entirely differing from him, we Consider it, however erroneous, to be a straightforward statement of what he really believes, and we respect it accordingly. We are not amongst those who would deny to others the liberty of expressing their honest convictions, or I of expressing, as we^ouraelvea have done, any just grievance. | Notwithstanding; your article of yesterday, we assert our right to protest against the matters complained of. We .also take this opportunity of stating that we shall not be deterred from doing what we consider our duty to Oaptain Read's memory or his Estate by any newspaper tirade. In conclusion, we are content to leave our conduct to be judged by time and by the right-thinking portion of this community 5 which, by the way, we do not consider to be altogether composed of or represented . by the Povbktt Bat Herald, the three or four persons on the Directory who appear to be opposed to us, or its Editor, Mr. James Browne. We have, &0., Wtf. ColiEtfAtf, J. Friar Clarke, Trustees of the late Captain Read's liatate, RS.— We shall also feel obliged if you would publish the accompanying lettter from Mr. E. ff. Ward, junr.
