A CLEVER OLD BIRD.
You say you obtained that eh .-quo from Mr. Hamilton, at the National Bunk, in Cuba street on the 29th March ?" asked the prisoner before the Wellington Bench. "Yea, I did," replied the the detective. " You recollect you are on your oath, I presume ?" continued the accused. "I do," was the curt answer. "And you swear— now mind what you say — you swear that you you got that cheque from Mr. Hamilton, at the bank on the 25th March 1" •« I did." " Then have the goodness to explain to this Court how that could be, when the 29th March was Easter Monday, and the bank was closed." The detective was taken completely aback, and was obliged to admit that he had made a mistake as to the day. A laugh ran through the Court, and the prisoner looked triumphant. On leaving the Court the prisoner kept up his nonchalant air, and offered to bnt the sergeant in charge " two drinks " that he got off on a charge of uttering the cheque of Mr. Smith's. He also observed that it was a great nuisance hi 3 stammering so, and that lie would try and get the Judge to let him chant his defence, as he never stammered when he sang.
