REPORTED DEFEAT OF CHILIANS IN PERU.
Panama, March 31. • , The Star and Herald says : The Chilians are reported to have met with a disaster near Moquega. The Minister of War wishing to surprise the Peruvians,, marched under cover of night, to attack them. He fell into an ambush, and of one regiment of 1,200 men only 67 escaped. Reported Chilian loss, 1,300 killed besides wounded and prisoners. The Huascar and Magellens, in the attack on Arica, lost twenty-five men, killed and wounded. Among the former is Commander Thompson, of the Huaacar, and two other officers. The Mano Copac, carrying Amerioan guns, struok the Huascar ten times, carrying away her mizen-raast, and seriously damaging her hull, while the_ Mahbo Copac and shore batteries were uninjured. Many houses in the town were knocked down and several woman "and children killed. The Chilians had not given notice of intention to shell the town. Two Chilian war vessels visited the Lobos guano islands and stopped the loading of about twenty vessels. _ . A little boy of seven had been orcjered to take claret by the doctor. A friend, dining with the family, said to him, " You should put a little water to it ; it brings out the taste." " Thatfs rail very fine, " responded the seven year old, "but I prefer the taste leftin;" ,„. .[
