■;'•"•' '•'■ NAPIER. •• ■/';... This. Day. The, Criminal Sittings of the Supreme Court .open at 10 o'clock this morning, before Judge Richmond, who arrived by the Ta«-ania yesterday. The Court was crowded with jurymen and witnesses in the various cases, leaving ' but little room for the general public. 2 p.m. Tn the case of Meta, charged with rape at the Supreme.Court this morning, the Grand Jury came in and stated that they could not believe the evidence of the girl. The Judge told them that if they could by other evidence find a true bill, they would be justified in doing so. Thev flccordinglv brought in a tru« bill. The Crown Prosecutor then said he was afraid from the evidence that the girl was a consenting pßrty. A jury was empannelled, and a verdict of acquittal given. Another indictment will be preferred for attempting to casually know a girl under 12 years of age. A true bill was brought in against R«nata, Hori Hnpi, Matenga, and Wiremu Piri, charged with robbery and *Bnault at G'sborne. The other native gives Queen's evidence. WELLINGTON. This Day. THE FIVE MILLION LOAN. Government have received a cablegram from Agent-General, stating that the Bank of England having undertaken the issue of the loan. There is no doubt of its beng successfully floated. . It is reported on good authority that Rewi has declined to hold anv further communication with the Government, and has rejoined Tawhiao at Te Kniti ; also that Hiroki has left Parihaka, and has been offered refuge in the King country. He is now at Ngatimaru. . . : . A sfiHous stabb'ng case occurred on Saturday night. Two married women, neighbors, quarrelled, and on their husbands coming home, a row ensued betwepn the men when one, named Flannigan was severely stabbed, and hia wife severely bruised. Both are not ypt out of danger. The other husband, named Dennis McCormick has been arrested. , The new marble altar for St. Mary's Cathedral was consecrated yesterday by Bishop Rpd wood A complimentary benpfit fo Montague Browne (son of " Snyder ") journalist' and theatrical agent, given to him on Thursday night, was a great success. Tt was given by amateurs and. professionals combined, in conspquence of a severe accident he sustained about four months ago. The theatre was crowded, not an inch of space being unoccupied. There was over £100 in' the house. The whole affair manifested the esteem in which Mr. Browne is held in Wellington. • In Committee on the Property Assessment Bill on Friday night, the exemption of property to the extent of £300 was altered to £500. The liabilites of companies of taxation for balance of assets over liabilities was struck out. WANGANUI. This Day. Dr. Earle was, savagely assaulted in his surgery on Saturday by a madman named Antonio. After a conversation
with' the doctor, the madman took an opportunity of the doctor's back being aimed to strike him on the back of the head with a large stone. Dr. Earle was rendered insensible, and is still suffering from the blow. Antonio escaped. AUCKLAND. ; This Day. >y . At a meeting of the Working Men's Political Association, it was decided to support the proposal of the Wellington Local Industries Association to? have rf: New Zealand Exhibition,- after the close of the Victorian Exhibition. NEW PLYMOUTH. This Day. A private meeting of Mr Courtney's creditors was held on Friday afternoon. Liabilities to secured creditors^- £23,000 ; unsecured, £17,000. Assets ab«mt the same. It was decided to accept the assignment of the estate. . . . ' GRAHAMSTOWN. This Day. The Waiotahi company have declared a dividend of 2s 6d per share. The Moanatairi will declare a dividend before Christmas. The latter had a return of gold on Saturday of 443 ounces. CHRISTCHURCH. , This DayA good many persons are enrolling themselves in a company to establish a settlement on the Waimata plains. At the R:M. Court on Friday, Richard Davis, deputy Registrar of the Supreme Court, Christchurch, wag charged with filling-in d>cuments under the Debtors and Creditors Act, without their being stamped. The case was adjourned. Mr Delamain, the owner of race horses, had a narrow escape of being seriously injured. He was thrown from a brake and fell between a pair of horses. He stuck to the pole, however, and managed to mount one of the horses, 'which were goinsf, at a gallop, and suceeded in arresting their progress. DUNEDIN. : : - ■■■ This Day.
