At a meeting of the above held at noon on' Friday ! at : the Council 1 Chambers," thete were present Councillors Graham (chairman)* Johnson, McKay, Porter, Reeves, aiid Seymour. ; ' ' '. After the confirmation of the minutes of the previous meeting, the correspondence and Engineer's report were read and discussed. ■'/../. ■: County Subsidy —The' Clerk was instructed to write to the hon. the Colonial Treasurer, acknowledging the letter re subsidy. '. Engineer's Report. I have the honor to inform you that the various contracts in hand are progressing satisfactorily. The contractor for the Te Arai Bridge (Mr. Mclnnis) hopes to complete the work by Wednesday next I would recommends that before the work be taken over, that thesis centre tier of poleß be p\ariked up fyr a height of five feet, to prevent timber during a flood catching and lodging, I estimate the cost of proposed wnrk at' £80. . I would ask the authority of the Council to call tenders for the following works : — 1. For carting 500 cubic yards of river metal from the Matawhero crossing to the northern bank to be used, in repairing the roads during winter. 2. For met.illing the road from Makarakato Matawhero. 3. For gravelling metalled road from Waerenga-a-hika to Tram-road. 4. For sheet piling the south approach of. the Waipoa Bridge. 5. For fascining and forming portion of the Oweta Road. Te Arai Bridge— The Engineer informed the Council that £300 more than the original amount of the contract had been expended on the Te Arai Bridge. The planking the centre piles of Te Arai Bridge, was authorised by the Council, the work to be done at the schedule price. ■ Metal— lt was resolved that tenders be called for carting 500 cubic yards of. metal in accordance with the first recommendation of the Engineer. Matawhero Road— Some discussion arose as to whether tenders for the work should be called for in one or two sections. Councillor Porter proposed, and finuncillor McKay seconded, viz :— From Scrivener's to Biggs', and from Biggs' corner to the Bridge— Carried. Waerknga-a-hika Tramway Councillor McKay proposed and Councillor Johnson seconded that the Waerenga-a-hika tramway be metalled.— -Carried Oweta RoAD-The Council sanctioned the fascining and forming a portion of this road. Waipoa Bridge— The sheet piling for the south approach of this bridge was agreed to. Assistant Sheep Inspector— It waß resolved that a letter be written to the Colonial Secretary pointing out the .scattered nature of the Poverty Bay district, and urging the necessity of temporary assistance to be given to the Inspector in the charge of his duties. Unpaid Rates— Councillor Reeves moved for a return of the unpaid rates to be produced at next meeting. This was seconded by Councillor Johnson and carried. Meetings— lt- was resolved that ordinary meetings for the future be held at 7 p.m., as previously. Road Works — Councillor McKay moved that the Council negotiate a loan for the purpose of metalling the road to ,
Waerenga-a-hika. Councillor Beeves thought the Government should help the district, and objected to borrowing; because it rendered interest inevitable J Councillor Johnson was in favor of "thec iriotjon, dnd thought the matter should be deferred until after the report of 'the Finance Committee. Finance .. Oommittee — Councillors Ikeeve3-ittd:McEay were added to the Finance Committee. --■■ Committees— lt-was decided thatthe Finance Committee meet on Wednesday at 8 p.m., and the Public Works] -Committee on Saturday at noon.
