MR. TUTOHEN'S CASE.
[To the Editor of the HteRAM).] Sut, — Mr. Tutchen's name having been on the roll, and according to the test of evidence, erased, or struck out, it is only just, fair, and reasonable that Mr. Tutchen should be furnished with the reasons why the name was struck off. Nothing short of a valid reason Bhould excuse the compiler of the roll. Had the name never been on the roll, a simple omission, or mistake, might have been pleaded and accepted, but the case is very different, when it is clearly proven that the name was in its proper place on the roll and wrongly struck out. The compiler of the roll shoud be held responsible for the name being struck off, and unless he can show good reason for allowing it to be done, the name ought in common justice be ordered to be restored at once. The : absence of Mi*. Tntchen from home at the time of compilation, or the -sale of 'property which qualified him, or even a current report that Mr. Tutchen had left the district, might be accepted as justifying the erasure of his name ; but most assuredly some valid reason must be adduced to justifly the infliction of such an injustice on any citizen. Lately Gisborne has been celebrated for the bungling, or wiifful maladministration of its public officials, but I hope that such kind of blundering or injustices will be no longer tolerated. — Yours, &c, Ratepayer. [It is certain, from all we learn, that Mr. Tutchen's, name was on the roll. Then why was it struck off, and who is answerable ? .Mr Tutchen has paid rates which placed him on the ; roll and so far as we can discover he has done nothing to disqualify Mm. — Ed.] ' . ;
