THREE THOUSAND POUNDS having been invested by the late Sir Donald M'Lean for the purpose of funding Scholarships for the native Maori race, notice is hereby given Chat the Trustees of the Bequest have decided to offer for competition THREE SCHOLARSHIPS of the annual value of Thirty-live Pounds each, tenable for three years, and ■ pen to all Maori youths in New Zealand. The attention of intending Candidates is directed to the following : — 1. The subjects of examination will be — Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, Grammar and Composition, Biblical and English History, Geography, and easy translation of English into Maori, and vice versa. 2. Successful candidates will be required to attend the Te Aute Native College, Hawke's Bay, the Principal of which 1b J. Thornton, Esn., formerly Rector of the Oamaru Grammar Scnool. For board, tuition, books, &c, twenty pounds per annum will be charged. 3. Holders of Scholarships will be allowed travelling expenses to and from their homes each Midsummer vacation. 4. At the end of the three years a University Scholarship of the annual value of Fifty Pounds, and tenable for two years, will be offered for competition to the Scholarship holders. The winner of this Scholarship will be required to become a Matriculated Student of the Universitg of New Zealand, and to attend the College classes of some institution affiliated to the University. The examination will be held on December 15 and following days, at such places as shall be hereafter appointed. lt is requested that the Masters of Native Schools who have candidates for examination will forward applications to me at the earliest possible date, stating the name, ago, and address of each candidate, and the number of years he has been attending School.
