WAERENGA-A-HIKA RACES.

[To the Editor qf the Herald.] Sir, — In reading over a letter on the above subject, signed by "Englishman," he makes use of the uncalled-for remark : " When the Wonder was found not to be able to overtake West End, he was pulled back to Merlin, hence the any number of lengths." Now, sir, allow me to inform "Englishman " that the Wonder was not pulled back to Merlin. My instructions were to win the race if possible, knowing my owner had a considerable amount of money on the Wonder ; but in no part of the race conld I overtake West End, and by honest riding I was in that unthankful situation, viz. — second. I do not allow "Englishman," or any other countryman, to use such an unfounded accusation against me. I have been riding several years, and have to make my living by it, but if such men as Mr. " Englishman " are allowed to scribble such a tissue of falsehoods, not only mine, but many other honest jockey's living, would be gone. If the writer of that letter is not an Englishman, he may be a man who has the presumption to call himself an Englishman ; but, sir, no man who had not been mixed up with the lowest type of racing would attempt to say that such a swindle had been worked on the British public as to pull a horse back as he states. When " Englishman" is writing again, I would advise him to use his own name if he dare, because it is the height of impudence for such a man to call himself an Englishman, a word which in all parts of the world is a byword for fairness and honesty. — I am, &c, John Farrell, Rider of Little Wonder.
