NORTH VERSUS SOUTH.
We take the following from the Auckland Star : — Our remarks on various occasions with reference to the unfair apportionment of the Public Works expenditure under Mr Mecandrew's rule received further confirmation m the report of the Railway's Committee laid before Parliament. It is certain, as we have shewn, that Auckland has not received a fair share m past expenditure, but as usual it has been suggested that the future was full of promise for us. The report, giving the amount of contracts entered into up to the 30th September last, and which must be completed, does not bear out these sanguine surmises. The returns show contracts for North Island Railways ... £21,932 Middle Island Railways ... £171,655 How long is this sort of thing to go on, and how long will people submit to it . Our country neglected, settlement stagnant, our waste lands locked up, and the revenue of the people drained away to open lands that will not bear comparison with those at our door — is this to continue for ever? Is justice paralysed as well as blind ? These facts should be put before the people, and before our members m the House m every shape, until the very children running on the streets shall cry " Shame on it." If we are to make use of our heritage — if we are to advance as a city, as a people — we must rest until that which is our just, indisputable right has been granted.
