Christchurch Derby won by Hornby, by Songster, out of Toi Toi. 1 \\7 HILE THANKING gentlemen YV who have sent Mares, and those about to send them to SONGSTER, I wish to draw their attention to the following facts, which is no puff. Hornby, by Songster, out of Toi Toi, aold by Mr Redwood last year for Three hundred and fifty guineas, has won the Christchurch Derby, ran second for Cup, and good second for Metropolitan. The Derby brought seven of the eight acceptors to the post, Grand Duchess at the hut moment not putting m an appearance. Hornby, who was fancied by his stable, but not by the public, as he was declared to be an over grown colt that wanted time, won easily from Grip, who was little fancied. Billingsgate, who was a bad third, ran fast for about a mile, and then tired to nothing, thus proving " Hermit's " opinion that he would never stay the course. Betrayer, the winner of last year's Champagne, who started first favourite and who was greatly fancied by the stable and the public finished the absolute last. The Derby Stakes of 250 soys., added to a sweep of 20 soys. each. For 3year olds. Colts, Bst 101 b ; fillies, Bst slbe. l£ miles. Mr R. Ray's b c Hornby 1 Mr H. Redwoodls b c Grip... ... 2 Mr Waters' be Billingsgate... ... 3 Betrayer, Adamant, On Dit, and Midge also ran. Betting : Even on Betrayer, 2 to 1 against Hornby, 3 to 1 „ against Billingsgate, 6 to 1 against any other. After several breaks away, caused by the factiousness of Hornby and Adamant, the flag fell to a fair start, Grip immediately going to the front, followed by Adamant and Hornby, Betrayer a long way behind. Opposite the stand Billingsgate was third ; Betrayer making up his lost ground — the pace at the back of the course being very good —when Billingsgate drew up to the leaders. Coming into the straight Hornby went to the front, pulling hard, while Mr "Walters' colt and Betrayer were beaten half way up the distance. Hornby came away, and won cleverly by a length and a half ; six lengths between second and third. Time, 2 mins. 48 sees. WALTER BLACK. LOST. *FpBX>M the Maßonic Hotel, a BLACK JD & TAN CATTLE DOG.
