REMARKABLE REVELATIONS.

Some remarkable revelations have been made m the course of an inquiry conducted by the Bar Association at New York, before a commissioner, with regard to the management of the Ludlowstreet gaol m that city by Sheriff Reilly. It was m this prison that the famous " Boss Tweed" was confined at the time of his death ; and it has lately attracted some attention, owing to the escape of a notorious criminal known as "Red Leary," although why "Red Leary" escaped it is difficult to say, for life within the prison to a man of his tastes must have been, on the whole, far from a disagreeable existence. There are, it seems, two distinct classes of prisoners m the establishment — the downstairs prisoners, or " boarders," who pay their way and the regular or upstairs prisoners. The former are exempt from discipline, may do pretty much as they like, and have an unlimited company of both sexes. There is a bar m the gaol for the convenience of these downstairs prisoners , at which " Red Leary " spent most of his time. The songs sung by him and his visitors were, however, not of a high order ; and although some of the warders are said to be given to drunkenness and boisterous conduct, one of these functionaries, shocked at the songs of the " Red Leary " and his friends, endeavoured to raise the standard of harmony m the establishment by singing -'Auld Lang Syne" and 1 • The Sweet By-and-By." In the meantime, while the downstairs prisoners are thus enjoying themselves, the upstairs prisoners are m a frightful condition of filth and semi-starvation.
