[from our own correspondent.] WELLINGTON. Tuesday. Davey, the petitioner m Sutton's matter, was examined yesterday before the Native Affairs Committee. At the R.M. Court yesterday, Thomas Young was committed for trial on the charge of stealing a cheque for £12 10s from Colonel Whitmore. The prisoner was color-sergeant m the same regiment with. Colonel Whitmore. A cablegram from Sydney states that Captain Holt, late of the Press Agency, is suffering from a cancer m the stomach which is likely to prove fatal. A severe shock of earthquake was felt at seven minutes past six on Monday evening. James Taylor, clerk m the Treasury, blew his brains out yesterday morning. Pecuniary difficulty is supposed to be the cause.. He was 2*7 years of age, and son of the late Superintendent of Southland. This Day. While the Naval Brigade were drilling last evening, they found a lad about 14 years of age, hanging by his neck at a stack of timber. He was cut down and soon, recovered. Nothing is known as to the cause. At the inquest yesterday on the body of James Taylor, a clerk m the Treasury, who blew out his brains on Monday, a verdict of temporary insanity was returned. CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday. Yesterday, shortly after noon, there was the smartest shock of earthquake ever experienced here. The sale of shorthorns on Saturday at the Agricultural Show grounds realised 5057 guineas. J. N. Williams, of Napier, bought Kitchen's bull Rugby for 200 guineas. The highest price obtained for a Victorian imported bull was 260 guineas. The short-horned cow Duchess of Bridgewater was withdrawn at 650 guineas. GRAHAMSTOWN. Tuesday. Albuniias are quoted at 82s 6d to £5, and considerable business has been done at £4. AUCKLAND. This Day. The Zealandia with the [Frisco mail arrived yesterday morning. Mr. Mack Quintal, solicitor, was brought up at the R.M. Court on a charge of alleged forgery connected with a bill of sale. The case lasted all day and was remanded till Friday, the prisoner being released on his own bail of £200. An accident happened yesterday to Mr. W. Wade, while driving on the Onehunga road. Happening to encounter the Chairini's Circus Troupe, his horse was frightened at the strange sight v of two zebras, and capsized the buggy, the wheel passing over Wade's shoulder. He intends bringing action against the Circus Company.
