It is very seldom we place ourselves on our defence against accusations which are not true, or not correct ; but m the present instance we think it only proper to place ourselves right m the matter of a charge made against us by our local contemporary, the Standard. The editor of that journal has chnrged us with having sent the following telegram to the New Zealand Times : — "The Standard states that the Government are strongly against passing McDonald's Native Lawsuits Bill, and an attempt has been made to make capital out of it m favor of the Opposition." We can assure both the Standard and our readers that the Editor of the Herald never sent such a telegram to the Neio Zealand Times ; nor does he know who did. The Editor never sends telegrams to newspapers he does not correspond with, and he corresponds with none published m New ZealandHe has frequently been asked to wire messages of a public nature to the Press Aiiency, but as he does not deal with that firm, and is not their appointed agent for Poverty Biy, he would consider himself impertinent if he were to do so. If it were necessarry, we suppose the Press Agency would confirm our statement, as would the New Zealand Times if asked whether the Editor of the Herald had sent any message respecting Mr. McDonald or the Native Lawsuits Bill. While concluding this, it has flashed across our mind that we have once and only once sent a wire message to a distant newspaper. It was to the Napier Telegraph and done by request. The message was as follows : — " The Hudson Company are coming your way. Treat them well, as they pay their printing and advertising accounts like Britons."
