October 23. Lord Hartington, speaking at the Liberal demonstration at Manchester, stated that the abdication of Yakoob Khan precluded the possibility of a British Resident at Cabui, without sufficient protection. He also said that the Liberal party should call on the European Powers to respect the treaty obligations, and to insist that the Government of England should combine with the European Powers, not for the purpose of war, but in their efforts for the maintaining of peace, and to oppose aggression and protect the weak. Despatches from Sir Garnet Wolseley, dated October 7th, state that the annexation is irrevocable, and recommend the Government to acquiesce in the same. Further news from Cape Town, of October 15th, states that troops had j been sent to Middle burg, owing to the disturbances among the Boers. The corn maket is firm, with an upward tendency. Beef, inferior, 31s to 32s 6d ; medium, 33s to 34s ; finest, 34s 9d to 355. Currants have advanced from a shilling to three shillings. Brandy has advanced eighteenpence, owing to the damage caused by frost in f the crop in the Giraud district. Bum has advanced threepence a gallon.
