THE 65,000 SERFS OF NEW ZEALAND.

From a return recently published it appears that there is , a total European population m the Colony, over 21 years of agej gf v 116,008 persons, v ofewhom 82,271 are on the electoral roll printed for the year 1879., There are' 14,553 Maoris over 21 year* of age,' 6686 of whom are on the electoral roll, but only 2842 recorded their votes for the four Maori districts during the recent election. In the Auckland provincial district there are 21,793 persons over 21 years of age, of , whom 21,319 are on the eletoral roll ; m the Taranaki district there-are 2532. persons over 21 years of age, of whoni!lß7lare.on f th'ej electoral r,oU jin thejatawke's Bay district 'there are 4685 persons over 21 years of ' age, of whom 3191 are on the electoral roll ; m the Wellington district there are 14,362, persons over 21 years of affs'tf whom 9590 are on the electoral roll ;in the Nelson distriot there are 9935 persons over 21 years of age, of whom .6495. are. on the electoral, roll; m the Ma,rlborough district there are 1889 persons over 21 years of age, of whom 1465 are on the electoral roll ; m; the Canterbury distriot there are 36.004 persons over 21 yeats . of age, of whom 14; 860 are on the electoral roll } m the Westland district there are 4357 persons over 21 years of age, of whom 2204 are on the eleqtoral roll ; and m the Otago distriot there are 31,551 persons over 21 ■years of age, of whom 21,237 persons are on the electoral roll. These figures, which are. printed , m. a Parliamentary paper, will speak for themselves (says the New Zealand Times), and Sir George Grey Will find that by the printing of them he has been euchred m one of his leading trump cards-namely that of the " 65,000 serfs,"., withj which he played so successfully during his late stumping tour.
