AUCKLAND.
Tins Day. The Government have replied to the petitioners respecting the Minister of Marine case that the law does not Justify demanding an explanation from the Grand Jury as to their action taken. The Government have, however, sent for the depositions taken m the R.M. Court. Mr. Heig-hton's blacksmith shop was burnt down on Saturday evening. It is stated he is insured m the Colonial, but the amount is not known. Hauraki Manning, who escaped from the police and took refuse with the Maories was charged on Saturday at ■the -R.M. Cqurt at Dargaville with giving valueless cheques. , _ ... I THeY prosecution failed ' to! establish fraudulent intent, and the case was dismissed. There was a number of natives m and around Dargaville, some of them armed, and made no secret of their intention ,to rescue the prisoner had he been ■ committed for trial. When the case ■ wasi dismissed they paid the European the £30 of which he alleged he had defrauded.

This Day. Mr. Vivian caßt at his foundry on Saturday last, a number of articles from Taranaki sand. The [ casting is very successful. . ~ ' '• '■■ The Hannah Mbkaii is still on the spit at Mokau and all attempts to float her ineffectual.
CHRISTCHURCH.
This Day. Trout fishing is being pursued with great zest.. At Fendaltown on Saturday one angler killed 29 fish m five minutes, but they were mostly small, the largest being one and half pounds. In the Avon the fishing has been tame, owing to the contractor being engaged m clearing the stream of weeds. A three-mile trotting race came off on Saturday, on the Riccarton Road, between Morlin's and Porter's mares. The former won easily. - . ... ; The,, publicans have agreed to give £25 for a mile handicap flat race, open to all comers, at the Friendly Societies fete on the Prince of Wales Birthday.
