The Government steamer Stella took the 'Frisco mail down the West Coast to Wellington, where the East Coast portion was shipped into the Southern Cross, which left there yesterday, and is expected at Napier about noon to-day. . AUCKLAND. i : . . This Pay. At an Executive meeting of. the North Island Association, James McOosh Clarke stated that Auckland had been defrauded of £410,248 in the past, and had a further claim for £803,195 out of the new loan, making in all £1,213,443. In reply to an application from Jhe Board of Education, a letter was received from the Government, that a further sum for school buildings would be placed on the estimates to meet special requirements including those of Auckland. > ; ' CHRISTCHUROH. . C ' ' ' This Day. John Davis, an old pensioner, wasarrested yesterday for attempting a rape on a single woman on the night* of the 17th instant, at or near the Chriatchurch Musuem. DUNEDIN. This Day. A draymen, named ' Meldrum; in attempting yesterday to stop his horse, which had taken fright at an engine, on the Bastle-street tramway, was knocked down, and sustained injuries which it is feared will prove fatal. j
