[from our own correspondent.] NAPIER. This Day. The Hawke's Bay Jockey Club Steeplechase meeting came off yesterday. The racing, though not tirst-class, was not bad. There was a good attendance. The jumps, though anything but difficult for tirst-clas3 horses, were somewhat stiffish. This was particularly the case at the water jump, at which, m the Grand National, Ren»ta Kawepo's horse Tarawera broke his neck and died immediately. The Maoris had a sort of tangi over the animal, and made great be wailment over the loss. They left the ground then without stopping for another event, having doubtless had enough of racing for that day. Renata was not present. At the same jump, m a subsequent race, the Jockey broke his collor-bone. Beyond these mishaps the meeting passed off very pleasantly. One prominent feature was that Munn won every race m which he rode — four out of five. He only missing riding m one. WELLINGTON. This Day. In the Supreme Court yesterday, m the case of Richardson against the Bank of New South Wales, an action to recover £9000 damages, for alleged breach of agreement to allow an overdraft for £3000, the jury gave a verdict for plaintiff, with £1700 damages. A meeting of the unemployed last night appointed a deputation to wait on the Government, urging the necessity to provide work to alleviate the distress prevalent m Wellington. AUCKLAND. This Day. The following telegram was forwarded yesterday to Mr.- F. J. Moss, member for Parnell, by a section of his constituents : — " Under the present circumstances, we desire that you sink party considerations, and go for a share of the Public Works expenditure for the North. Hall and Whitaker preferred to combination with Macandrew." Intelligence has been received that the Natives have destroyed all trig stations erected by Mr. Edgecumbe, Surveyor, between Huntley and Rangiriri, and have ordered him off the ground. The Working Men's Political Association discussed last evening the advisability of imposing duty on sugar, with the view of encouraging the establishment of sugar refineries m the Colony. The thirty-sixth half-yearly meeting, of the Bank of New Zealand was held to-day, when a dividend and bonus, was declared equal to 15 per cent, per annum. Premium m new shares, £180,000, added to the reserve fund, and £5,800 carried forward. This makes the reserve fund £555,000. GRAHAMSTOWN. This Day James Mackay is at Ohinemuri but what he has done with the Ngatihako respecting the late outrage is net known. A man named Charles Petersen, a Dane, was killed yesterday, by a limb of a tree falling on him while he was working at falling timber m the Ohio Creek Bush. WESTPORT. This Day. A charge of perjury against Eugene Joseph O'Connor occupied the Reef ton R.M. Court for three days. He was committed for trial. O'Connor was Borne time ago a member of the House of Representatives, and was as the "Buller Lion."
