LOCAL AND GENERAL.
His Worship the Mayor has agreed to tak« the chair at the public meeting, to be held at 8 o'clock, m the Masonic Hall, this evening. Captain Porter has only this day returned from Wellington, and if we are not greatly mistaken, he will be able to state the ruinous mischief which the Repudiationists are causing m Poverty Bay. The Combination entertainment last evening, when the Gisborne amateurs joined the Hudson troupe for the benefit of the Football Club, was very largely attended, and was financially as well as otherwise a pronounced success. The amateurs did their level best, and they could do no more. Mr Piesse and Mr Berry caused roars of laughter at their very clever impersonations. They played their respective parts admirably and were loudly applauded. Mr Bourke also proved himself well up m his part and hit it off most characteristically. A few hitches, usual on such occasions occurred, but they were scarcely noticed. The entertainment did not close until near midnight. Mr Whitefoord. R.M., arrived this morning by steamer, and will commence his duties forthwith. There are large arrears of business to bring up, and many cases not laid, awaiting the arrival of au R.M. The Georgia Minstrels are announced to appear m Gisborne on' Wednesday next. This Company has created quite a furore throughout the Colonies, and the two or three nights they will play m Gisborne will afford the only opportunity of witnessing their clever performances. Captain Manter, of the Alexa, which arrived at Wellington from Foo Chow, on Saturday, reports when off the southern coast of Catherine Island, and thinking he had a clear courae before him, aaw land ahead, and going to the masthead he couuted six islands all covered with cocoanut trees to the water's edge. They are apparently circular, and about 12 miles m diameter, the water breaking between them, and on the Admiralty chart of 1877 only one island is laid down; A sensation was created m Hobart Town by the discovery that there had been sold there as waste paper a pile of official records giving all particulars of persons tried at the various tribunals for offences alleged to have been committed against the penal law some 45 years ago. The names and all particulars of the trials are formally given, so that the data are furnished to curious purchasers who wish to obtain a knowledge of their neighbors' antecedents. ' • De Murska, the singer, was made au honorary member of the Grand Army of the Republic at Ithaca, New York, the other day.
