NAPIER.

This Day. The Hawke's Bay Education Board yesterday decided to hold over the application to enlarge the Gisborne Schoolmaster's house, pending the report of the Inspector on the matter.

AUCKLAND.

This Day. A fire broke out on Sunday night m Branston and Foster's Brass Fitting Establishment, Mansfield's Buildings. Mr. Foster had a narrow escape of his life. Damage done estimated at £900. The Queen's Redoubt Hall was burnt down . on Sunday morning. Porter's loss is £300, and not insured. Oaptain Carey died on board the Rotomahana on his voyage to Syney. He was well known as Captain of the Star of the South, Ethel, and Glencoe. A public meeting was held yesterday .evoning, respecting the Minister of Marine case. Mr. May presided. A resolution was passed, asking the Government to institute an enquiry by commission, and that a gross miscarriage of justice had taken place.

NEW PLYMOUTH.

This Day. The meeting at Parihaka is over. Te Whiti made his usual Bpeech, but not ao confident m tone. The natives who do not live there, talk of not attending any more meetings .while there ia so much disease m the place.

OHRISTCHURCH.

This Day. An adjourned meeting of the unemployed was held on Saturday evening. A petition was adopted to be sent to the House of Representatives, praying for the removal of themselves and families by the Hinemoa to Hawera, to work there on the roads and railway.

DUNEDIN.

. This Day. A writ for £2,500 has been issued against the Mount Ida Chronicle, for an article published against Professor Wallenburgh and Dr. Grant.
