VOLUNTEER REPORT.
From the report on the Volunteer Force of New Zealand, presented to both Houses of the General Assembly, we learn that tho total strength of the volunteers of the North Island is 5041, made upas follows : Cavalry, 622 ; Arr tillery. 288; Engineers, 315; Rifles, 3,373 ; Naval Brigade, 442. In addition to the foregoing there are 669 cadets. In the South Island the total f Dree nurabers 2,991. The Hon. Colonel Whitmore, m his report to the Gover : nor, says :— " It is my. duty to bring to your notice that volunteering has very greatly increased during the past year, and that the Volunteer spirit has. spread widely throughout the Colony." In another paragraph, the honorable colonel : says : — ." I cannot conclude without informing your Excellency that on the West Coast, as soon as our relation with the natives appeared to be critical, and when the regular paid force of the colony m the locality was hardly sufficient te inspire a feeling of security m the district, the settlers came forward so readily to enrol themselves for the defence of the country and to maintain law and Order, that m ten days tho large number of 1,500 volunteers were under arms and training."
