Conviction of the Matawhero Natives.
Wellington, 11.25 a. m. Matene Kaipau and others, charged with entry on Bond's land, at Matawhero, were convicted of a common assault, and sentenced to one day's imprisonment, and bound to keep the peace for six months. The Judge, m passing sentence, said it was lightened by their believing it was right to defend their possession. The Natives, however, are likely to be misled as the Interpreter put , it they were defending "Their lands." AUCKLAND. This Day. The half-yearly meeting of the South British Insurance Company was held* yesterday. A dividend at a rate of ten per cent per annum was deolared. A preliminary meeting relative to the Minister of Marine oase was held . last evening. V Resolutions were passed requesting the Mayor to call a public meeting, and urging the Government to detain the Captain, mate, and witnesses till the case was reheard, and to prevent the seamen m gaol from being forced to go to sea m the vessel. GRAHAMSTOWN. This Day. A skull, whioh is pronounced to be that of a European, wa| found yesterday m removing a mullock 'heap m repairing a road. It has a dent qn the top, such as would be caused by^a blow from a pick. It is supposed) to have been buried eight or nine ye* rs. A case of murder is suspected. -. NEW PLYMOUTH. This Day. The Natives who lei t Parihaka are again returning to "hear he words of the prophet. There is an extraordinary mortality amongst the children at Parihaka, which has not subsided. Oven 100 deaths m a few weeks, and as many jas 12 children dying m one day. j NELSON , V This Day. A meeting of the Wail lea electors was held on Saturday, whin a vote was passed condemning Mr Shephard for supporting the Grey pary. A requisition is being signed asking him to resign.
